What is the Lions DENN?

The Lions DENN is a unique training center focusing on improving digital equity for those with vision loss and who otherwise have difficulty with access to technology.

Students receive hands-on assistive technology training on a variety of devices to build the skills and confidence needed to live and work independently.

What We Can Do

Broadband Connectivity

Comprehensive technology assessment including getting connected to broadband if needed.

Digital Literacy Training

Training in digital literacy skills and assistive technology for daily use and employment.

Hardware & Software Access

Access to hardware and software for continued learning, independent living, and economic mobility.

Community Partnerships

Collaboration with the Center for Digital Equity, E2D, and other community partners to maximize impact.

The model uses assistive technology subject matter experts, Lions Services employees through the Technology Ambassador Program, and community partnerships. The Center for Digital Equity—a local initiative focused on "Making Mecklenburg County the most digitally equitable community in America"—is a partner in this venture as well as E2D.

By 2025, the Lions DENN serves the broader community offering one-on-one trainings for community members, education for community partners, special projects, and extended services for corporate and government partners.

Meet the Team

The people behind the Lions DENN bring lived experience, technical mastery, and deep commitment to every session.

Laurie Ledwell, Assistive Technology Specialist at Lions Services

Full-Time Assistive Technology Specialist

Laurie Ledwell

Laurie graduated from UNC Charlotte with a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice. She began losing her sight due to glaucoma before entering college and experienced the challenges of navigating higher education as a visually impaired student during a time when assistive technology was limited or nonexistent. "It was an uphill battle," she recalls, "going from having sight to losing it and attending college."

In 1996–1997, Laurie completed a computer training program at Lions Services that opened the door to her first job in customer service at Alamo Car Rental, where she used ZoomText software to perform her work. She joined the Lions Services team in 2008, working in production and later as Canteen Manager—and began helping her coworkers learn to use their phones and other devices.

In May 2025, Laurie was promoted to her current full-time role as Assistive Technology Specialist. She is currently enrolled in the Assistive Technology Instructor Training Courses through World Services for the Blind, with plans to pursue her CATIS certification (Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialist for People with Visual Impairments).

"I lived in an era without Assistive Technology, and now with it we can live more independent lives. I can now use my smart phone and computer to do things independently and not have to depend on friends and family—someone for assistance."

Impact Story

Raven's Story

Five years ago, Raven Joiner began losing her vision. By February 2021, she could no longer drive. Over the past six months, her vision declined further, leaving her able to see only blurred shapes, light, and shadows.

Through Lions Services, Raven's story changed. She regained her independence by securing full-time employment—allowing her to provide for herself and her two children. Through the Lions DENN program, Raven received assistive technology training in 2025, relearning how to use a laptop and keyboard with vision loss. Upon completing the program, she was provided a laptop equipped with JAWS software.

Today, Raven can access the internet, manage her emails, and create professional documents—skills that opened new doors. She now serves in leadership roles with the National Federation of the Blind as Fundraiser Chair and Assistant Chair. Raven also serves as an ambassador for Lions Services, using her voice and experience to uplift others on their journey to independence.

"The Lions DENN has given me back my confidence and reminded me that I can add value to my life. I can now provide for my family again and help other blind individuals like me."
— Raven Joiner
